winter field
the crows devour
the last light
polje zimi
vrane žderu
prošlu noć
zimowe pole
kruki pochłaniają
ostatnie światło
Haiku zdobyło trzecią nagrodę w konkursie chorwackiego magazynu IRIS. Jurorem był Jim Kacian.
Jego komentarz do haiku:
The proffered scene is like a classic photograph, reminiscent of the
work, perhaps, of John Berger from his days in the Pyrenees — natural,
sharp, highly contrasted. What raises the poem above the strict
delineation of place, however, is the violence of the verb. Light must
be clinging to that snowfield, and yet what compels the poet is its
disappearance, embodied by the blackness that is the crows. The crows,
then, become the emblem of the death of the day, light-eaters, with all
the foreboding such creatures conjure in our imaginations. As winter is
already a time of diminished light, their infernal work seems all the
more apparent, and appalling.
